(This is partly in response to Leigh's comment on my last post.) I'm actually in favor of the idea of a third party -- something along the lines of a Christian Workers Party -- but of course that is pie in the sky in this country.
Short of that, I do think that we ought to consider where we eat just as we ought to consider where we invest. There are of course various "Social Justice" mutual funds that refuse to support companies that are seen as particularly exploitative or disproportionately damaging to the environment or the species. Why not extend that logic to "Social Justice Restaurant Lists"? We could then have a (governmentally sponsored? I dunno) program that allows restaurants passing certain tests to place a green sticker on their windows next to the Mastercard/Visa sign.

This from the Times on attempts in Sweden to calculate relative climate damage caused by each option on a menu and list it right there for diners to see.
The article suggests, by the way, that it's not so much where the food is from but what the food IS that counts (which relates to our recent debate about the relative importance of "localness").
But is this menu-listing business something to welcome? And could the proposal fly outside of utopian Scandanavia? Somehow it is hard to imagine Americans allowing themselves to be faced with numbers representing how much climate damage their food is doing when thinking about what to order.
Before Susan asks me the inevitable "what does this have to do with faith?" question, let me reframe this as the question whether
Christians, in particular, might or should want this information, or encourage their favorite restaurants ...
